Does neurofeedback actually work?
NeurOptimal® is the latest generation in neurofeedback technology and has been used by wellness professionals for over 15 years. The software is designed to meet the brain's natural optimization processes and is backed by research in neuroplasticity and neurogenesis.
Since the 1960s, numerous studies have demonstrated that providing auditory or visual cues to the brain, as feedback reflecting brainwave activity, is meaningful for optimizing wellness and regulating brain patterns.
For neurofeedback to work, information transfer to the neurofeedback device must happen by wired or wireless means. The general rule is that a wired system presently provides faster transmission, which is important for the best results. In order for the training to be effective, that electrical information has to register in microseconds, the speed the brain communicates.
Since the brain is always looking to optimize its functions, giving it good information about its habitual functioning, which is measured in brainwave changes, will help it to make the most efficient and effective decisions.
NeurOptimal® dynamical neurofeedback simply provides millisecond-by-millisecond feedback to the user's brain and the brain does the rest. Nothing is forced or added. No brain map is needed prior to training as the mapping functioning is integrated into the system's software. The system's design is based on the brain's ability to rewire itself in an organic process if provided cues to its maladaptive patterns.
Can I do neurofeedback at home?
Yes, neurofeedback can be done safely at home, but only certain devices are designed for at-home use. Specifically, fully automated devices are the best for home brain training as they do not rely on the oversight of an expert trainer.
Presently, NeurOptimal® is the only fully automated device and is made by Zengar Institute. In 2010, their system gained full automation and in 2018 the FDA acknowledged the device was safe to be used by individual consumers without the guidance of a licensed healthcare provider.
We use the NeurOptimal® system for both in-office sessions and at-home neurofeedback rentals. We know clients will be running safe and effective sessions on themselves and family members because of AutoNav, the automated software feature exclusive to NeurOptimal®.
Each session is unique to the person's symptoms, as well as their changing needs from session to session. As the technology samples data from the brain millisecond by the millisecond and provides immediate feedback based on shifts, each individual training provides exactly the feedback the brain needs in real-time to optimize and shift to be precisely in alignment with present-moment needs.
How long does it take for neurofeedback to work?
The number of sessions varies depending on the client's needs and goals. Additionally, factors like stress, diet and sleep can impact the timeline of training. There tend to be two general categories of clients: those with short term goals, seeking specific changes, and those with long-term goals, targeting overall wellness.
The first "symptom relief" group often rents for 2-3 months and when they feel their improvements reach a stable point, return to the system. In six months or a year later, they may re-rent for a tune-up if stressors return and they find themselves unbalanced. For example, someone who is targeting performance anxiety and feels it is gone or is easily managed doesn't feel the need to train.
The second "on-going optimization" group often starts renting and realizes after a month or so that the NeurOptimal system is helping them with more than just the issue they started training for. They begin experiencing how the system was designed: to optimize the brain as a whole and help it re-regulate at all times. This group can include stressful lifestyles, children with ongoing stressors such as at school, or professionals who want to keep their minds as sharp as possible with greater mental acuity, minimum emotional reactivity, calmer mood overall, and heightened creative flow. This second group often will return the rental after one month and decide, instead, to purchase a system.
Knowing the reasons behind your brain training and your wellness goals can help you decide how long to train and what type of training is best: purchasing versus in-office sessions or a home neurofeedback rental.
What happens during the neurofeedback session?
During a NeurOptimal® neurofeedback session, EEG sensors are placed on your scalp and ears which read electrical signals or brainwaves coming from your brain Nothing goes back to your brain through the sensors.
When the session begins, music is the medium for the feedback. The brain is designed to process auditory perception 24/7 at all angles to note changes in our environment. NeurOptimal® was designed to work in tandem with our brain's natural and efficient way of noticing changes to improve performance.
The NeurOptimal® neurofeedback program reads signals from the brain 256 times per second! That’s how fast your brain is communicating. When the NeurOptimal® software detects changes in brainwaves, it induces a micro-interruption in the music, which is noticed as a skip or static. This signals your brain to pay attention to the here-and-now. Through the training, you are learning to use present moment information to assess yourself and your surroundings. This information nudges the brain to let go of habitual patterns.
This is comparable to daydreaming. In a daydream, you (your brain) are not aware of what is happening, not until someone calls your name for example (this moment is each millisecond that the music stops during a session). At the same time, you notice that you were lost in a daydream, and perceive the quality of that daydream, as well as take in information about the here-and-now. This here-and-now information shines a light on the otherwise, habitual and automatic patterns and provides opportunities to learn and change.
Is neurofeedback covered by insurance?
Individual health insurance companies determine what is covered and it varies from policy to policy. Reach out to your insurance to inquire if EEG biofeedback or neurofeedback is covered. The cost of renting a home neurofeedback device, which is not covered by insurance, is approximately the same price as many co-pays, approximately $40/session.
