What is Neurofeedback Training and how does NeurOptimal work?

    December 14, 2017

NeurOptimal® neurofeedback presents information to the central nervous system about what it just did, nothing more, nothing less. It's non-invasive, effective and safe. It is designed to improve the overall performance of the brain - the hub of all functions in the human body. It is not surprising then, that clients experience successful outcomes across a broad spectrum of symptoms, including symptoms they weren't intentionally trying to improve!  Learn what happens in a session and what the top benefits are.

    What Happens in a Session?

The system is designed to give the brain information about what it has just done millisecond by millisecond. The brain then uses this data to organize and re-wire itself to function in alignment with present needs, while utilizing the minimum energy necessary.  Put another way, a brain map is 'created' by the device and fed back to the brain to be examined millisecond by millisecond so that the brain can improve it's functioning from the information.  For example, the stress response is a huge waste of the brain's energy if the body is not currently in danger and that is why neurofeedback decreases stress and clients report feeling calmer and relaxed after sessions.

During a session, the client listens to music. The music plays continuously when the brain is running “on course” (in alignment with present-moment needs for that particular brain) but as soon as the neurofeedback system detects that the brain has “veered off” its path or has become less stable than what it just was, feedback is provided to the brain via a micro-pause in the sound. (Most of the pauses are consciously inaudible but heard by the brain which is processing auditory information at a speed we don't register consciously when it is that fast, but when 3 or 4 interruptions happen in rapid succession we hear it consciously as a "record scratch" sound. Please don't focus on trying to hear the interrupts!) The pause acts as an interrupter of the habitual pattern, such as the stress response, which allows the automatic-functioning brain to look at how it's veering off course. By offering this information the neurofeedback software gives the opportunity to the brain to adapt itself in response to the information. It's like you were using last week's weather report to decide what coat to wear and now someone just handed you today's weather report!

During a session it's ok to sleep, read, "zone-out", talk, draw, play a game, build with legos, or even play a game on an ipad/iphone! IT STILL WORKS!!  Just make sure to turn off the bluetooth on the devices around you and that the sound volume is set to low on your ipad/iphone to not interfere with the sound from the system.

What can I expect in a Neurofeedback Session?

    What is Neurofeedback?

Training with NeurOptimal is actually a learning task. The brain is learning that the best decisions are made by using the information is in the present moment (today's weather report), not by doing what's habitual (the old news). You get results because your brain is actively learning, even if you are not doing the learning consciously. Once your brain learns to use the present moment as it's source of information, symptoms start to shift and dissolve. For example, the stress response (anxiety, worry, insomnia, irritability, anger, depression, etc) is meant as the strategy for resolving an immediate threat to your body's safety. So when that brain trains with neurofeedback and gets to see that it's doing a stress response when there is no danger present, it will start to shift out of that reactive pattern. You'll know your brain is learning because you start to calm down, cheer up, sleep better, react less strongly, and have greater mental clarity.

Neurofeedback improves the emotional response patterns we have developed habitually. A good analogue is like when you are daydreaming and in a daydream you (your brain) are not aware of what is happening, not until someone calls your name (the music stopping in neurofeedback) and you simultaneously realize that you were lost in a daydream, and recognize the quality of that daydream, as well as take in information about the here-and-now. With that wake-up call, you then have a choice. And because of the way the brain is designed, your emotional brain will choose responses that are more in alignment with current needs. As a result, instead of screaming or fixating with worry, you'll speak firmly or acknowledge your concerns.

    NeurOptimal Neurofeedback is...

    • DIAGNOSTICALLY AGNOSTIC: Instead of targeting specific symptoms, it focuses on optimizing overall brain function. This approach naturally ameliorates most complaints, whatever their source.
    • NON-INVASIVE: When you are training, no electricity, vibration or external signal is going into the brain. In addition, brain training with NeurOptimal® does not target specific areas of the brain nor does it push the brain in any direction by giving it goals to achieve, decided by an “expert”. In this way, it is globally effective while remarkably free of unwanted side effects.
    • 100% NATURAL: Each brain is unique and knows the best way to “correct” itself for improved efficiency. The system simply provides the central nervous system with information about its own activity. Given the right information the brain can naturally optimize itself.

    5 Benefits of Neurofeedback Training

    • improves quality of sleep
    • increases neural plasticity, which helps the brain de-stress and learn patterning more adaptive to current needs
    • improves executive functioning: mental clarity, focus and decreased impulsivity
    • helps unstick the brain of the stress response, namely, anxiety and depression
    • rehabilitates the symptoms associated with head injuries such as, headaches, inability to concentrate, insomnia, sensory overload
