Discover how NeurOptimal® Neurofeedback helps your brain self-regulate naturally. Learn how it works, its benefits, and what to expect during sessions with us.
It's easy to feel overburdened, distracted, or just not your best self in the fast-paced world of today. Many of us are looking for practical, long-lasting solutions to feel more in control and balanced, whether it's through emotional ups and downs, chronic stress, difficulty sleeping, or simply the feeling that your mind is constantly racing.
I've worked with people from a variety of backgrounds who are fed up with symptom management and want to address the underlying cause of their issues. They want a sustainable, natural method of feeling more robust, calm, and clear—not simply short-term solutions.
That’s where neurofeedback comes in. Specifically, NeurOptimal®—a gentle, brain training at home technology I’ve been using in my practice since 2010. In this blog, I’ll explain what NeurOptimal® neurofeedback is, how it actually works, and why it’s helped so many of my clients feel more like themselves again.
Let’s start with the basics. Neurofeedback is a form of brain training. It gives your brain real-time information about its own activity, so it can learn to regulate itself more efficiently. Think of it like a mirror for your brain: when it can see what it’s doing in real time, it has the opportunity to optimize.
NeurOptimal® is a unique form of neurofeedback called Dynamical Neurofeedback®. Unlike traditional systems that diagnose and treat specific symptoms, NeurOptimal® works by training your brain to return to its natural flexibility and resilience. It doesn’t push or force the brain in any one direction. Instead, it supports the brain’s own ability to self-correct and reorganize.
It’s 100% non-invasive, drug-free, and doesn’t require any effort on your part—no mental tasks, no focusing, no behavioral strategies. Just sit back, relax, and let the system do its job.
Neurofeedback has a rich scientific history dating back to the 1960s. The pioneering work of Dr. Joe Kamiya at the University of Chicago showed that people could learn to influence their brain activity through EEG (electroencephalogram) feedback. His findings sparked decades of research into how we can use brainwave feedback to promote better mental health and cognitive function.
As neuroscience progressed and our understanding of neuroplasticity grew—the brain’s remarkable ability to adapt and reorganize—so did the field of neurofeedback. Today, we have systems like NeurOptimal® that incorporate decades of neuroscience and the latest in technology to support mental and emotional well-being in a highly refined, non-invasive way.
So how does it work? The process is elegantly simple and deeply sophisticated.
NeurOptimal® is constantly monitoring your brain’s electrical activity in real time. But instead of measuring the strength of brainwaves, it focuses on the timing—watching for sudden, subtle shifts that indicate the brain is about to become less efficient or organized.
When one of these shifts occurs, the system delivers a tiny interruption in the music—a brief pause that acts as a signal to your brain. This interruption is the feedback.
Your brain instantly registers this moment—what we call a “mirror moment”—and responds by adjusting itself back to a more balanced state. It’s a completely natural, automatic process.
Imagine walking down the sidewalk, lost in thought. Just as you’re about to trip over a crack, you catch a glimpse of your reflection in a shop window and instinctively correct your posture. That’s what this feedback is like. A gentle cue. A moment of awareness that helps your brain avoid an inefficient path and stay on course.
Over time, with continued feedback, your brain becomes better at self-regulation. It learns how to return to calm, clarity, and flexibility more quickly. There’s no forcing, no diagnosing, and no need to aim for a specific brainwave pattern.
It’s a non-directive process that supports your brain’s natural ability to optimize itself—on its own terms.
Your brain is not static—it’s a living, learning, adapting system. This ability to change is called neuroplasticity, and it’s at the heart of everything I do as a neurofeedback trainer and psychotherapist.
Every experience you have, every thought you repeat, every stressor you encounter—your brain is constantly responding and reshaping itself based on that input. The problem is, when life hands us chronic stress, trauma, or unrelenting pressure, the brain can fall into patterns that are meant to protect us but end up limiting us instead. These patterns can show up as anxiety, irritability, insomnia, foggy thinking, or simply feeling disconnected from us.
NeurOptimal® steps in as a kind of gentle guide. By offering your brain real-time, non-invasive feedback, it allows the nervous system to recognize these outdated patterns—and move beyond them. It’s like updating old software that’s been slowing everything down. Your brain becomes more efficient, more resilient, and more in tune with the present moment.
And when your brain shifts, everything else can shift too.
Clients often tell me they feel clearer, calmer, more themselves. They’re able to pause instead of reacting, focus instead of spin, sleep instead of spiral. These are real, meaningful changes—and they start with the brain’s own ability to grow and heal.
While NeurOptimal® isn’t a treatment for any specific diagnosis, people often come to me when they’re feeling stuck or overwhelmed by:
Because this training works with the entire central nervous system, it doesn’t just target one symptom—it supports the whole system in functioning more efficiently.
That’s why the changes can show up in surprising ways. Someone might come in for focus issues and suddenly notice they’re sleeping better. Or they come in for stress and realize they’re responding more calmly to situations that used to trigger them.
One client told me, “I feel like I’m finally driving my own brain, instead of it driving me.” That’s the kind of transformation that’s possible—when your brain is supported in doing what it’s naturally built to do: adapt, grow, and thrive.
There’s a solid foundation of research supporting neurofeedback. Decades of clinical studies demonstrate its effectiveness in enhancing brain function across various conditions:
What sets NeurOptimal® apart is its innovative, non-linear dynamical approach. Instead of following fixed protocols, it uses advanced mathematical modeling to monitor the brain’s activity in real time, engaging in a dynamic “dance” with the brain rather than imposing specific changes.
Developed by clinical psychologists and refined with input from NASA engineers, NeurOptimal® is designed to be exceptionally safe, efficient, and user-friendly—offering a cutting-edge tool for brain self-regulation.
NeurOptimal® sessions are designed to be effortless and relaxing. You don’t have to “work” or think about anything—your brain does all the processing naturally.
Here’s what typically happens:
During the session, many people describe a sense of calm or deep relaxation—some even drift off to sleep! Others might not notice an immediate change but often report subtle improvements in focus, mood, and sleep after a few sessions.
The beauty of NeurOptimal® is that it works quietly beneath the surface, gently guiding your brain toward balance without any effort on your part. Each session is a step toward greater clarity, resilience, and well-being—at your own pace.

How many sessions will I need before noticing changes?
While everyone’s brain is unique, many people begin to notice subtle improvements within 3 to 5 sessions. For deeper or long-standing issues, 20 to 40 sessions are often recommended to create lasting change. It’s a gradual process, like building muscle strength—you support your brain over time, allowing new patterns to emerge naturally.
Is neurofeedback safe for children and seniors?
Yes! NeurOptimal® is non-invasive, gentle, and completely safe for people of all ages—from young children to seniors. It doesn’t involve medication or direct brain stimulation, making it an excellent option for families and individuals seeking holistic brain support.
Can I do neurofeedback while taking medication?
Generally, neurofeedback can be used alongside most medications. However, it’s important to keep your healthcare provider informed and continue any prescribed treatments unless advised otherwise. Neurofeedback often complements medication by enhancing brain function and overall well-being.
What does “non-directive” neurofeedback mean?
Unlike traditional neurofeedback systems that train the brain to increase or decrease specific brainwave frequencies, NeurOptimal® takes a non-directive approach. It doesn’t tell your brain what to do or try to “fix” anything. Instead, it acts like a mirror, allowing your brain to self-correct based on its own internal wisdom.
Will neurofeedback interfere with my daily activities?
Not at all. Sessions are relaxing and require no active effort on your part. You can continue your normal routines before and after sessions. Many clients find the sessions rejuvenating and report enhanced focus, mood, and energy throughout their day.
How does NeurOptimal® compare to other neurofeedback systems?
NeurOptimal® uses a dynamical, non-linear model that tracks your brain’s activity moment-to-moment without trying to impose specific targets or protocols. This makes it more adaptable and user-friendly than traditional systems, which often require lengthy assessments and customized protocols.
